How to Save Money in the Kitchen

1.Plan the menu

Saving money on groceries can be easier than you imagine. All you need is to always have a plan when paying the grocery store a visit. Most probably you have been in the situation where you go there with the sole purpose of buying just a loaf of bread and a carton of milk, but on the checkout you realize that you have ten additional unforeseen items in the basket. What the plan can do for you is to help you avoid such contingent expenses and stick only to things. By buying only what you need, saving money will become possible.

2.Buy in season

The highest quality products come from farmer’s markets, which, however, are not available all year round. Your menu needs to be planned according to the fruits and vegetables of the season. This is bound to save you a lot of money.

3.Buy in large quantities

This practice, also known as ‘buying in bulk’ is really effective. A big number of the staples are way cheaper when bought in bulk – eggs, flour, milk, rice, etc. However, before you stack all your shelves with them, take into consideration their expiration date. Don’t buy astounding quantities of food, only because it is cheaper that way. After all, you wouldn’t want to throw food away. Buying in bulk can save you a decent amount of money, only when done properly.

4.Prepare large meals and don’t throw away leftovers

It is far cheaper, both in terms of shopping and in terms of the energy consumed to cook meals for four (for example) than to make such for two. And if a certain dish is good the day it is made, then it will definitely be as good the next day as well. So there simply is no sense in wasting. Just put some tinfoil over the meal and refrigerate it. However, this applies if you don’t live on your own. Otherwise, eating a big family meal might take you more than two or three days.

5.Make good use of the toaster oven and the microwave

If you need a small, individual meal real fast, why not utilize the smaller household appliances – the toaster oven and the microwave. Both consume far less energy than the regular oven, plus, both can make you a great meal for one, even a small pizza.

6.Clean with homemade detergents

Now, this has two positive aspects. It not only saves you a good amount of money, but it is also  Eco-friendly and will not have a negative effect on your health. The products you can use in order to make yourself some pretty effective cleaning detergents are basically numerous and vary from lemon and vinegar, to toothpaste and soapy water. The acidic nature of the lemon and vinegar makes them ideal for scrubbing the oven, for example, while the toothpaste is great for polishing.

7.A few words on the dishwasher

The dishwasher is a real helper in the kitchen, no doubt about that. However, it also wastes more water than one does when doing the dishes by hand. This is why it is vital to only run the dishwasher when it is completely full, rather than for four plates and five glasses. If you don’t mind getting your hand wet, stick to hand-washing when the dirty dishes are just a few.
