Shrinking your grocery bill isn’t just about using coupons and timing your shopping trips. It’s also about getting the most food for your dollar by not wasting anything. Here are some tips to help make use of everything you buy so you don’t have to throw any food out.

Shop More Frequently

Instead of making one large shopping trip per week, it’s easier to keep track of your food purchases by making two to four trips in one week. This helps keep food from spoiling and makes it easier to adjust mid-week when unexpected things come up.

Plan Your Meals

Planning your meals will help make sure that you use food within its shelf life. Keep a running tally of perishables and their expiration dates so you know when your time might be running out.

Organize Your Fridge, Freezer and Cabinets

By keeping your fridge and cabinets organized, it’s easier to see exactly what you have and make meals accordingly. If those apples are hidden, they’re more likely to go bad before they get eaten.

Shop on a Full Stomach

If you eat before you take a trip to the grocery store, you’re less likely to stray from your list and succumb to in-store advertising specials.

Instead of buying food for lunch, take last night’s leftovers. If you don’t like to eat the same thing two days in a row, turn last night’s chicken into today’s chicken noodle soup. By utilizing all of your leftovers, you are saving money and stretching your food budget.

What to Do with Expired Items

Stale bread turns into French toast, bread crumbs or bread pudding. Brown bananas turn into banana bread. Apples turn into pie, apple crisps or muffins. Most fruit is easy to turn into another dish. You can always do a Google search for recipes for your specific expired item or throw it in the compost pile.
