Beating the Heat to Save Money

Summer is already starting and you are probably dreading dealing with the heat. Not only can it feel miserable, but your wallet suffers when you aren’t prepared. I’ve done some research for you so you can beat the heat this summer and save some money too!

Around the House

One of the best ways to deal with the heat at home is to keep your blinds or curtains closed during the day. The south and west facing windows are the most important to cover. The sun coming in means heat is coming in, too. You should also try to shift hot activities to early morning or after the sun goes down. Using the oven can really heat up the house, try cooking with a crockpot or pressure cooker instead. The same goes for drying clothes, to really avoid heating up the house, hang them out on a clothesline. Not only will you save electricity, you will get fresh-smelling clothes. If you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher, run that late at night or early in the morning, too.

Something you may not think of is how many times you go in and out. I remember my mom telling me to close the door so I wasn’t air-conditioning the whole world. The other side of that is that you are letting heat in every time you open the door. Ceiling fans can help keep you cooler by keeping the air moving, but they only cool people, not the air. Turn them off when you leave the room for more than a few minutes.

Stay Cool, Stay Healthy

Another way to save money is to prevent health problems. If you work outdoors or just spend a lot of time outside, take a few precautions. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool water, if it is too cold it can cause cramps. Second most important is to protect your skin, wear a high SPF sunscreen on all exposed skin, and reapply it often.

Wear tightly woven, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to provide a physical barrier to the sun, and allow air to circulate around your body. Take plenty of breaks to get out of the direct sun to allow your body to cool down. These tips can keep you from heatstroke and in turn, keep you from losing money to a medical bill and lost time from work.
