5 Ways to Save Money on Thanksgiving Dinner

When it comes to the holidays it’s all about the food for me. Even though it has been a tough year economically, I intend to have all my holiday favorites this year by playing my cards right. Here are five ways to save on your Thanksgiving Dinner this year without cutting out your holiday favorites.

Don’t Over Commit

It’s easy to commit to bringing more items than we can afford and then feeling overwhelmed later. Also, don’t be afraid to communicate exactly what you need. Sometimes speaking up and making our needs known can make things happen and in turn save us money. Most people coming for the holidays want to contribute but just don’t know what to bring. So many times I find myself wanting to be the super host and won’t allow others to be charitable.

Stick to What You Like

Keep the must-haves at the table this year but cut out the things your family overlooks year after year. Just because it’s traditional to have cranberries, stuffing, sweet potatoes, etc. doesn’t mean you have to have them. If nobody eats it or wouldn’t notice if it was missing then substitute more of what your family does like.

Be Open

Cutting out cranberries from your dinner this Thanksgiving is one thing but cutting ties with family and friends near the holidays can make for a lonely and expensive holiday. Opening your Thanksgiving celebration to include more family and friends, even the ones that are the most difficult to get along with, can save you money overall because there are more people to share the burden of the food costs.

Look for Last Minute Deals

Many grocery stores will give a free turkey when you spend a certain amount on other groceries. Explore online coupon sites for holiday savings. I was skeptical before about online coupons but have found many reliable deals. See Coupons.com for Butterball turkey coupon and many others.

Utilize your Leftovers

There are many ways to incorporate turkey and ham in your diet after the holiday feast. You can send leftovers with your children to school and bring leftovers to work with you. You don’t have to stick to just the traditional turkey sandwiches for lunch.
